Kahlua Coffee BBQ Sauce is a tangy and sweet sauce that is super versatile for a variety of recipes.
I think I crave summer and BBQ this time of year every year. ITS FREEZING out and I am in Vegas without snow on the ground like most of the country is so I shouldn't reeaaalllly complain about 38 degrees, but I miss my summer weather. So I pretend it is summer with food. Like BBQ foods.
I know BBQ isn't what most people are making this time of year, I am seeing tons of yummy hearty soup recipes perfect for chilly weather, like this sweet potato leek one from my friend Christy that I want to make soon, or other comfort foods that many of my food blogger friends are posting. I am also seeing lots of "diet" foods for people trying to detox from the holiday cookie indulgences, like salads and what not. I love soups and salads. And BBQ
Homemade BBQ sauce has been on my cooking "bucket list" for a while now. We love BBQ sauce but its hard to find a good tasting one that isn't full of junk or fillers. We really like, Bone Suckin' Sauce, which has awesome flavor and ingredients, it isn't organic, but its one of the few without icky high fructose corn syrup in it. So that is our " go-to" sauce. Well, it was until I made this one and realized how EASY homemade BBQ sauce is and how killer it tastes. It HAS to be good, it has Kahlua in it!!
I had seen a few recipes online for a coffee BBQ sauce and I was thinking that Kahlua would be good in it as well, I may or may not have been drinking coffee with Kahlua in at the time of my idea for this recipe, so I wanted to try it. I found a few other Kahlua only ones online that I thought were just OK but I really wanted to make one with a few other ingredients I love, like ancho chili powder. I love that stuff. If it is too cold where you live to go outside and BBQ right now or even think of it, this sauce is amazing on my crock pot Hawaiian style Kalua pork, any grilled or oven roasted chicken or any meat really. We will grill turkey burgers on our stovetop grill pan and use the sauce on those. So just because its freezing outside doesn't mean you can't enjoy BBQ inside! We are just crazy enough to grill outside still.
Kahlua Coffee BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
- ½ c brewed coffee not instant
- ⅔ c organic ketchup
- ½ c plus 2 tablespoon Kahlua
- 3 large shallots peeled
- 3 cloves garlic peeled
- ½ cup dark brown sugar
- ⅓ cup sweet chili sauce
- 1 tablespoon tamari
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- 2 teaspoon ancho chili powder
- 1-2 teaspoon sea salt
Instructions
- Place shallots, garlic and 3 tablespoon of the ketchup in a food processor and blend into a paste. Add that mixture along with the rest of the ingredients to a sauce pan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Lower heat and simmer 45 min or until reduced by ⅓ and has significantly thickened. Taste and add salt and more spices if desired. Let cool in pan and then transfer to a glass jar and keep refrigerated until ready to use.
Notes
Make sure your coffee is a stronger brew, anything mild or weaker brewed won't give as rich of a flavor.
I would have posted a picture of this on something we ate it with, but we ate it all up before I got around to it. So just take my word for it that is so so good on anything. Well probably not cake, but you get the idea.
