We just got back from almost two weeks spent in my happy place - Hawaii. Maui to be exact. The weather was amazing, the beaches were relaxing and fun, the food was delicious, the adventures were incredible and the drinks were refreshing. My kids loved it as much as my husband and I. It was a struggle to pull them off the beach every evening once the sun had set. I don't blame them one bit, it's hard for me to leave the beach as well. On one of the first days there we made the obligatory ABC store visit for a few items, sunscreen, towels and some local coconut rum and POG to make Mai Tais and these POG mojitos. Just pog juice for the kids.

What is POG?
POG is my favorite Hawaiian juice from when I was a kid. It is a combination of passion fruit, orange and guava juices. It is also called "Pass-O-Guava" nectar and the locals call it pog drink.
Pog drink is where it is at! You can buy it in cans as well as by the half gallon carton at any grocery store or market on any of the Hawaiian islands. On the mainland I normally find it at Asian or International grocery stores. Shops that carry Hawaiian groceries or you can always order from Amazon. Amazon has everything.
Ingredients for a POG cocktail:
- POG - passionfruit orange pineapple juice - canned or carton. If you are up to making your own juice go for it.
- Coconut rum - for an extra boost of tropical flavor - feel free to use any rum you like if you don't care for coconut.
- Simple syrup or granulated sugar - simple syrup if you want to shake the cocktail, granulated if you are muddling the sugar with the mint.
- Fresh mint - try to find Mojito mint if you can, has a very fresh mint flavor and not at all "toothpasty'.
- Limes for juice and garnish.
- Sparkling water or club soda - can be flavored such as lime or coconut La Croix or plain.
Lets make some passion orange guava cocktails:
I like to make these as big cocktails so I use a pint glass. Use any kind of glass you like.
If one could describe Hawaii using the senses I would describe POG and passionfruit as what Hawaii tastes like. If it had a specific taste. I know that sounds weird, but when I cut open a passion fruit that smell reminds me of Hawaii and POG even more so. One sip and I am transported back to the Outrigger Waikiki or Outrigger Reef hotels that we stayed at all the time as kids and I got to have my POG for breakfast with macadamia nut pancakes.

Notes
I will be sipping on these POG mojitos in the next few week still as our Hawaii vacation is still so very fresh in our memories, as I go over the many photos I took on our trip and as the weather is still super hot here in Las Vegas. Summer isn't over yet, and I would live an endless summer if I could. I will be posting a few recaps of our vacation with lots of photos soon and I have so many recipes I want to recreate and new recipes that our trip has inspired me to make for my blog. So stay tuned for more Hawaiian inspired goodness!
